Michigan State Senate - District 2

Top Issues

Wages / Job Benefits We need democracy in the workplace, where most of us will spend a third of our lives. That means standing up for and expanding the right to organize for better wages, conditions, and decisions that directly impact working families. Housing As State Senator, I will support policies such as just-cause eviction laws, tenant protections, and right-to-counsel efforts that give tenants a fairer shot in legal proceedings. We must, at the same time, invest in building more affordable housing and ensure that development includes community benefits. Civil Rights As your State Senator, I will support expanding access to voting, strengthening protections against voter suppression, and increasing transparency in campaign finance. And I also believe that democracy doesn’t end at the ballot. Economy I believe that, as a society, we are only as decent as we treat our most vulnerable. As our federal government puts profits over people, Michigan’s seniors, veterans, and people living with disabilities are paying the price. As your State Senator, I will hold accountable bad actors who prey on seniors and children with Artificial Intelligence scams, and I will zealously defend economic security and the right to retire with dignity. Immigration I will push for legislation that limits state and local law enforcement cooperation with ICE, establishes clear sanctuary policies for schools, hospitals, and workplaces, and prohibits the use of state resources for federal immigration enforcement. Economy In the richest country on Earth, no one should be forced to choose between feeding their family and paying for health care. In Lansing, I’ll prioritize investments in the care we need to relieve working families from unfair bills and burdens. My priorities are universal childcare and healthcare, raising the minimum wage, expanding good-paying union jobs, strengthening and protecting unions, making college and higher education accessible, and expanding affordable housing. Immigration Many families in our community have been harmed by ICE abductions, and are worried that their immigration status as undocumented community members, green card holders, or naturalized citizens leaves them vulnerable. I believe every person living in our communities, regardless of their immigration status, deserves to live with dignity and without fear. Abortion / Contraception Reproductive freedom is a fundamental right. In November 2022, Michigan voters made their position clear and enshrined reproductive freedom in our state constitution by a wide margin, and that mandate deserves to be honored and defended. In Lansing, I will defend abortion access, support Medicaid coverage of reproductive health services, and oppose any attempt to defund or obstruct the care our communities rely on. Education As your state Senator, I will be a strong champion of public dollars for public education, and I will advance policies that ensure all of our students can thrive in safe and supportive learning environments. Environment / Energy Environmental justice is central to how we address both public health and economic inequality in our communities. Families in our district are paying high energy bills while dealing with unreliable service, living near industrial pollution that harms their health, and facing real concerns about water quality and affordability. I support aggressive action to reduce emissions, hold monopoly utilities accountable, invest in clean energy, and hold corporate polluters accountable while ensuring a just transition that protects workers and lowers costs for families. As a former Chief of Staff in Congress, I’ve worked on federal funding strategies that prioritize community health and environmental resilience, and I will bring that same approach to Lansing. Environment / Energy I am also hearing concerns from community members in the district about big tech data center proposals all over our state that are using massive amounts of energy and increasing our reliance on fossil fuel infrastructure absent strong safeguards to protect communities. I've joined Allen Park residents in opposing the proposed data center in the city and demanding answers on its impacts on electric rates, pollution, water use, and public health. As State Senator, I will ensure that large energy users, such as data centers, operate transparently, contribute their fair share to grid and infrastructure upgrades, and do not threaten our air and water resources. Infrastructure / Transportation Residents of District 2 know all too well the impact of unsafe, reckless driving on our communities, as traffic violence and auto-related fatalities have impacted far too many families in our district. As your State Senator in Lansing, I’ll build on municipal efforts to repair our roads, implement traffic calming measures, while pushing for investments in reliable public transit, safe pedestrian infrastructure, and protected bike lanes.
