Michigan State Senate - District 23

Top Issues

Legislation My HB 5091 would strengthen transparency and accountability by expanding Michigan’s Public Officers Financial Disclosure Act to require annual, detailed financial disclosures from county commissioners and county executives in the state’s largest counties. Currently, only state legislators and certain statewide elected officials must file these reports; HB 5091 would extend these requirements to local leaders in counties with populations over 150,000. Economy Small businesses flourish when they operate freely, with less government oversight. It's evident that fostering competitive competition and minimizing overreach is vital for their success. By allowing small businesses to thrive in such an environment, Michigan can attract and retain the talent necessary to reclaim its position as a leading economic state. Education I believe every child deserves access to a well-funded, high-quality public education, and by supporting this increase in per-pupil funding, I stood up for families and communities across Michigan who rely on strong public schools. Taxes / Budget My House Bill 5812 would strengthen the tax settlement process in Michigan by updating administrative procedures to reflect the repeal of the State Real Estate Transfer Tax Act, thereby simplifying tax administration and promoting efficiency and transparency for taxpayers. Education Keeping schools accountable ensures our students' need are met while giving parents peace of mind about their child's education. In-depth evaluation of schools and teachers holds them responsible for their performance and quality of education. By holding schools accountable for transparency guidelines, we ensure resources are used wisely and parents feel safe and comfortable in the education their child is getting. Education Educational freedom is vital in today's job market. While traditional college has been a success pathway, numerous alternatives like vocational training, apprenticeships, and certificate programs allow individuals to pursue careers that match their interests and skills without the financial strain of a four-year degree. I fully support giving students the agency to choose paths that fit their career goals and personal circumstances. Taxes / Budget Senior citizens, too, deserve better treatment. Unfairly taxing their pensions, which are already subject to taxation during their working years, adds unnecessary financial strain. Criminal Justice / Public Safety Law enforcement is essential in emergencies, being the first to respond and the last to leave the scene. We rely on local, state, and federal law enforcement daily. Making sure they are properly funded and supported is crucial to maintaining a safe community. Infrastructure / Transportation Investing in our infrastructure is crucial for economic growth and improving community well-being. Properly allocated resources can ensure the roads are maintained without increasing cost to the taxpayer. These improvements not only create jobs in the short term but also lay the groundwork for sustained development, attracting businesses and improving the quality of life for residents.
