The City Legislature is the municipality's governing body, responsible for voting on ordinances and policies, and often is in charge of hiring a city manager.
Members of the council elected by districts shall be qualified electors and residents of the district from which elected, and the member elected at large shall be a qualified elector and resident of the town. No member or member-elect of the council shall be appointed to any other position in the town government, except as acting mayor when a vacancy occurs as provided in section 3-I-7 of this charter, during his term of office or for the term for which he was elected, or for one year after the expiration of his term to a position created in town government during his term of office.
Filing Requirements
File Declaration of Candidacy between June 25 and June 27, 2018 and Nomination Form with signatures of registered voters of the district determined by city/township (usually at least 50). *Some party positions may be endorsed by party and not need to file. Any candidate for public office, political action committee or political party committee must adhere to Rhode Island's campaign finance laws (R.I.G.L. 17-25).
