What is Planning Commission?
A planning commission is a local government board that helps guide a community’s growth, development, and land-use decisions. Planning commissions review proposals for new housing, businesses, zoning changes, and public projects to ensure they align with a city’s long-term plans and regulations.
Planning commissions typically:
- Make recommendations on zoning laws, land-use policies, and development proposals

- Advise the city council or county board on planning priorities

Members of planning commissions are usually appointed volunteers who bring a mix of community knowledge, professional expertise, or civic interest. Their work helps balance economic growth, housing needs, environmental stewardship, and neighborhood character.
Planning commissions don’t usually make final decisions on major projects. Final decisions are typically approved by elected officials. However, planning commission recommendations carry significant influence.
